Never buy Onkyo again!
Our SR-606 reciever has been in the shop for about 2 months. The service is a joke. Call Onkyo and get treated like your nothing.
onkyo rocks
phenomenal product and an incredible value. everything you can want out of a 1000 dollar receiver at a fraction of a cost. very low distortion levels as well!
A serious receiver for a serious user
If you need a receiver that is reliable and intuitive, this is the one for you and well worth it at around $400. If you’ve got a real home theater like me, you can’t be messing around with settings and running cables between components over and over again in order to manipulate your receiver to doing what it should be doing. I was looking for something that was reliable and easy to use out of the box, and this is exactly what I got with this Onkyo. I have a very complex set up, as my receiver and AV equipment is in a separate room from my projector mounted on a ceiling 14′ feet high. Because of the nature of my beast of a theater, I only have my projector displaying video from one HDMI source to keep it simple. I’m not about to start running more video sources to the projector since that involves major surgery of my house, and I needed a receiver that could handle complex switching of video sources to one and only one HDMI cable. I tried an inferior receiver, and was very disappointed with the results since that receiver could not reliably handle multiple video inputs. Sometimes the video came up, sometimes, it didn’t. Many people might not demand a receiver handle ALL video and audio, since most can run some video to the TV itself, but as you can see, it’s not that simple for my sort of set up and I needed the receiver to just work like it was supposed to work and pass all video through one single cable every single time. From my experience with this receiver, I have not had any issues with this unit being the brain of my theater, handling HDMI, component, and composite video sources and spitting out picture perfect quality video to my projector through a single cable and sound to my klipsch speakers. A very reliable and well built device which will serve you well. At $400, it’s a great value, as it matches the performance of those twice as expensive.
Bad Experience with TX-SR606
I am not happy with the reliability of my Onkyo receiver. I purchased a TX-SR606 in Sept. 2008. The unit worked well for about a year, then started having problems switching between HDMI input sources. The problem is getting progressively worse. At this point it takes about 5 minutes for it to recognize the signal when switching HDMI input source.
Receiver malfunctioned after a few weeks
I bought this receiver because it had all the features I was looking for, especially the HDMI pass through and upscaling. It was great for the first couple of weeks. However, it began putting red halos around all the dark areas on screen. I found that if I shut the unit down for awhile, the red outlines disappeared for about 45 minutes, but it would come back again right about in the middle of a movie. It was well ventilated, so I think there was a heat issue. This unit runs hot by design, but something was just wrong with mine. None of the troubleshooting steps helped and finally the Onkyo tech support guy recommended returning it.
I returned it to Amazon within the last day of Amazon’s deadline for returning the receiver. Amazon took it back, but charged me for the shipping and deducted the $84 promotion or sale price. I lost $100 bucks and at least a few hours of my time for the pleasure. I won’t buy anything electronic like this from Amazon again just because I have so little control of the transaction. With the $100 bucks I lost, I could have gone to Fry’s or Best Buy and gotten a better receiver and been even on my money.
My rating may not reflect the brand or model as a whole, but mine was a dud.
Fantastic receiver at a great price
I had to purchase a new receiver because my previous one, a Pioneer would intermittently lose the center channel dialogue on a digital signal. That was my 2nd Pioneer home theater receiver. The previous one also had issues with sound cutting out. You’d think that I’d learn after that and buy another manufacturers product. So this time I did my research on home theater receivers, not even considering Pioneers. For the price, the Onkyo seemed to be a hands down winner. The sound is incredible. It has lots of connection possiblities. Whether HDMI, Component etc. The manual is good, lots of information in there. The only thing that I wasn’t too thrilled with in the beginning is that to do the programming on your TV, it has to be connected up with an HDMI cable. Without the cable, your programming is done with the display on the receiver. The manual says that. I unfortunately didn’t have a TV with a HDMI connection. Once I hooked up the Epson projector with a HDMI cable, programming could be done on the screen. Much easier to do.
The bottom line, this a a terrific receiver. I am thrilled with the sound that I get from it. It has been in service for a couple of months already and it’s awesome. What are you waiting for, go buy it now.
great receiver
I love this receiver! It was very easy to set up, the on-screen menus are easy to navigate. It has great features including lots of HDMI inputs, but also upconverting so you can route your non-HDMI sources thru a single HDMI cable to your TV. I’ve had good luck with Onkyo receivers for over 20 years now, and this one does not disappoint either.
SOUNDMAN
I can’t thank Amazon enough..I’ve been tracking this Product for some time..couldn’t wait to get the unit home ..I was not dissapointed..!! ..Service / Speed was incredible..the Onkyo is Incredible..!!.what an Experience !!!..Thank You All Very Much..!!…Soundman
Great receiver!
This receiver does everything is says it will with great sound quality. Very easy to set up with other components. For the money it can’t be beat.
Great sound, lacking in extras
This receiver sounds great and has plenty of options to adjust the audio to your liking. It has enough power for a moderate level setup and plenty of inputs. The setup mike was easy to use and did a decent job adjusting the settings.
I big feature I got this unit for was the powered zone 2 in order to have audio run to a 2nd room. For whatever reason the 607 is not capable pushing audio from digital sources to the zone 2. I couldn’t believe this when I read in in the manual but it’s true. Since I have everything hooked up through HDMI, this makes the zone 2 feature completely worthless.
I have all of my components plugged into this unit and when switching between inputs and sound modes there can be a bit of a delay. Also when I play music from my cablebox or media center PC through the receiver and I turn on or off the TV, there is 5-15 seconds of silence before the audio comes back. This seems strange to me since the input never changes.
I tried upconverting video from my old Tivo and I’m not convinced that it changes the video quality at all. As many have said before this thing runs HOT.
HDMI not reliable
I was optimistic about this receiver. I recently upgraded to digital cable and purchased a Tivo Premiere and Blu-Ray player. After hooking up the receiver, HDMI connections only work with my Xbox 360. Neither the Tivo Premiere or Samsung Blue-Ray player will work with HDMI. The receiver never seems to be able to “sync” or pick up the HDMI signal from those two devices (it cycles through a couple different mode indicators on the front of the receiver, but never “locks” onto anything) and no picture ever shows up nor does any audio come through. I can hook both of these devices up via component video and optical cable for audio and that works fine.
Now I’m stuck debating whether it’s worth using it this way or simply returning it and looking for an alternative…
Amazing…………….
I have had this receiver for 1 year now and have it coupled with Polk Audio RM 6750 speakers. The surround sound experience on 5.1 TV shows is awesome. You really couldn’t imagine it being any better, then you put in a blue ray DVD and it becomes amazing! I was very, very impressed with this receiver. I picked it up for $375 and the RM 6750’s for $219 and couldn’t be happier. The receiver itself has the audyssey function that makes set up amazing. I had to tweak the speakers manually to my liking but that was also a snap. The interface function is very easy to use and once it is setup you don’t have to mess with it again. I also have an airport express with airtunes and stream my itunes library to my surround system and the sound is amazing. I’ve never had surround sound before this and have nothing extremely high end to compare it to, but I do love music and good sound, and this system delivers in every way. I’ve had no problems with the system, no buzzing issues, and no heat issues although it is very well ventilated on an open Z line stand. I’m not saying that many of the problems experienced with this receiver are not real, but I have not had any problems with mine and couldn’t be happier. The only con would be that when you change channels or commercials come on that aren’t the same sound/media type the receiver will make a clicking sound. Not enough to change my attitude toward the product though. Hope this helps.
Good start…poor finish
I absolutely loved this receiver when I first got it. It worked perfect and did everything that I asked of it. The way I had it set up was to run my 5.1 theatre off of the main amp and then had it connected to a speaker selector off of zone 2. This worked great for about three months. All of a sudden a month ago it just stopped working. I then went to amazon.com to try and get he returned to them and they were no help. They advised that I needed to get a “work id” from onkyo which I came to find out was a made up thing on the amazon side. Amazon said I had to go to Onkyo. Well I did that and drove an hour to the service center. I got to the service center and they were very nice. I waited two weeks and got my “fixed” receiver back. I plug it in a Zone 1 works great. I try to turn the power on to zone 2 and bam broken product again. I then try and call up onkyo to get a replacement and they tell me I need to drive the hour each way two more times before they would consider a replacement for the faulty receiver that I have. The product works great till you have a problem. I was really surprised by the lack of customer service from both ends. Needless to say I am disappointed in both company’s.
LOVE IT!!!
I am not going to get into the technical because everyone else has. The receiver is awesome. Audio/Video HDMI switching is perfect. The Video quality is very very close to Direct connect.
I was looking at this receiver, the Pioneer 1019, the Pioneer Elite (bottom model at Best Buy), and Denon AVR-790. The Denon is tinny. The Pioneer has great picture, a little better than the Onkyo, but the sound is not the same. The Onkyo has more of a rich sound field, and you will get more out of the surround speakers with the Onkyo.
Blu-ray…………………good sound and picture quality.
Cable TV via HDMI………..good sound and picture quality.
Cinematube (Media Player)…good sound and picture quality.
Xbox via HDMI……………good sound and picture quality.
That’s right, 4 HDMI inputs, and it also has 2 more for audio only.
Great receiver for the price
I bought the TX-SR607 in early January 2010 and have used it heavily for almost 3 months. It replaced a Denon AVR-900 that I used for about 10 years and with which I had been pleased until its ProLogic mode recently failed. I considered competing receivers from Pioneer and Yamaha before selecting this Onkyo based upon a combination of price, features and the recommendation of a knowledgeable friend familiar with Onkyo products. The Onkyo showed me how much audio technology changes in a short time–greatly improved performance at half the price of the Denon. Setup does require reading the manual, but is straightforward. The Audyssey speaker calibration process is amazing–easy to use and very effective in optimizing the speaker settings for the specific room and usage pattern. Other features I really like are the ability to use main amp in a 5.1 configuration and the remaining 2 channels to drive remote speakers. The only drawback to this feature is that digital sources cannot be directed to the remote speaker pair, but this is clearly pointed out in the manual (well, it took some searching to figure out why–the manual shares a common fault in such manuals by omitting an index).
The receiver has really improved the quality of sound in all modes in which I use it–mostly standard DVD and TV movies plus CD and FM radio music. It matches well with the Klipsch surround speaker system we installed last year with the Denon and wondered why we did! Now we know–the sound is terrific. The Onkyo has many more features than I have had time to evaluate, but so far it has been a huge improvement and seems to be a great product with lots of potential features to be discovered.
Very Pleased
Wanted to upgrade to a HDMI receiver and after looking around at NAD and others I decided on this based primarily on very good reviews and the features I wanted. The picture improvement on my satellite signal has been dramatic running it through the receiver versus just going from the DirectTV receiver to my Plasma TV. The automated Audyssey 2EQ did a superb job getting the best sound equalization through my DCM TimeWindow and Bose 301 speakers. It set up easy and has a fairly intuitive menu system. The remote (once programmed) does a decent job running the Cable/satellite receiver and running my Panasonic 50″ plasma. I am now excited to begin searching for a quality Blue Ray player.
The sound is certainly improved over my old Denon DRA 275R which I am sure has alot to do with the Audyssey 2EQ, but you can manually program the speaker output via the menu (make sure to have the HDMI out hooked up to your display)if you choose. In my cabinet the Onkyo has about 3 inches of headroom and does not seem create to much heat though I have not been amping it up too much yet. This is a great product with many features. I am very pleased.
Pleased
I still sometimes wonder if some people are outside my house talking. Or if the police have some business on the block because the sirens sound like they are just down the street. Then I hit the mute button and the noise stops. I realize then that it is just the beautiful 7.2 Duplex setup’s background noise from the the show, movie, or game I am involved in.
The HDMI is flawlessly transferred from even my computer and superbly translated to my system and my 50′ screen. Even old DVD movies sounds are translated into 7.2 vividly as though you were there in the scean yourself.
For the price and how many components this system can support, this is an excellent purchase.
Best Bang For Your Buck
First off, this receiver isn’t very expensive at all compared to other receivers in it’s class. It practically decodes everything and it has six full 1080p HDMI inputs. I have cheap Yamaha 5.1 speakers from and older surround sound in a box system and this receiver brought new life to them. As far as performance, this receiver is amazing. The cons of the system can easily be overlooked and here they are: First off, the manual is confusing as all hell. It’s not for novices by any means. It runs pretty hot, so expect the room you place it in to rise in temperature by a degree or two… maybe more. It’s a little bigger than you’d expect, but it fits nicely in my entertainment center regardless. I heard the upconversion is a little on the weak side, but if you’re buying a receiver with six HDMI inputs, why would you be upconverting anything? Sounds to me like everything you own is HDMI. I know everything I own is. The only thing I have left to say is buy it and enjoy it.
Wonderful!
Bought this receiver as an upgrade to my Onkyo HT-SR600S unit (although I am still using that set’s speakers). Having all the HDMI hookups is a dream come true and choosing between inputs (ps3, 360, cable, etc) a synch (and gives my girlfriend less headaches) as all the video can be streamed through to the TV via one HDMI cable, including the Wii and 360 which are hooked up via Component cables.
Only downside is I had to order a new powered subwoofer as I couldn’t hook my old one up.
The sweet spot in Onkyo’s lineup
I did a lot of research after returning the Harman Kardon 154 I purchased locally. I was not happy with the HK 154 because I didn’t realize at the time I purchased it that it would not convert composite to HDMI. I did not want to run composite cables from my receiver to the TV. This Onkyo model will do the analog to digital conversion so I can run the Wii through this system and still just use the HDMI cable from the receiver to the TV. I did end up also adding an optical connection from the TV to the Onkyo so I could pipe the cable TV sound from the TV through the sound system. This is the lowest end model from Onkyo that does analog to digital conversion.
So, the sound. I bought the Klipsch HDT1000 speaker bundle with this receiver. After going through the simple microphone based setup (included with this Onkyo) the sound is truly stunning. The clarity and fullness of sound is amazing. I can clearly distinguish subtle nuances in the movies from one speaker to another. It’s as full as the sound system in a typical theater and sounds crisper than the theaters. I’m sure this system could get loud enough to break windows but I’m really enjoying the fact that I get incredible sound at lower volume levels.
The Onkyo 607 and Klipsch HDT1000 setup was a bit more money than I had originally planned on spending on a home theater but I have no regrets. I obsessed over this for a few weeks and did a lot of research. No regrets on buying this equipment.
